Some plants may wilt and die quickly, while others wilt more slowly and live through harvest. A sunken, dark area may develop in the stem just above the soil. Pinkish spore masses of the fungus may form on this dark area during wet weather or under frequent irrigation Roots have a dry, brown rot of the outer tissue.
